Volunteer Stories | Life at Hostel Knot in Shuzenji
What’s it really like to live and volunteer at a guesthouse in a small town in Shizuoka, Japan?
Here, we share stories from people who have volunteered at Hostel Knot in Shuzenji.
Some came to Japan from overseas, while others were already living in Japan and looking for a new experience. Each volunteer has their own story to tell — from everyday life at Hostel Knot and exploring Shuzenji and the Izu Peninsula to the special memories and connections they made along the way.
It’s about more than just sightseeing.
It’s about experiencing everyday life in a local Japanese community, meeting people from different backgrounds, and discovering a side of Japan you might never see as a tourist.
Whether you’re traveling through Japan, on a working holiday, or simply looking for a different way to experience life here, we hope these stories give you a glimpse of what it’s like to be part of the Hostel Knot community.

Experience Japan, Connect with the World
More than just volunteering at a hostel
Volunteering at Hostel Knot is a chance to experience everyday life in Japan while connecting with travelers from all over the world.
Guests come to Hostel Knot from across Japan and many different countries.
As a volunteer, you’ll have opportunities to chat with international travelers, share meals, exchange travel tips, and learn about different cultures and ways of life.
You can share what you know about Shuzenji and the local area while discovering new perspectives through the people you meet.
You don’t need to speak perfect English or Japanese to volunteer at Hostel Knot.
What matters most is your willingness to communicate, connect with people, and learn from each other.
A simple phrase, a smile, or a little help from gestures can be enough to start a conversation.
Whether you’re confident in your language skills or still learning, you can connect with people at your own pace.
If you’d like to practice a language, make friends from around the world, or experience a more local side of Japan, this is a place to start.
Discover a Different Side of Japan
Volunteering at Hostel Knot is about more than helping out at a hostel.
It’s also about becoming part of everyday life in Shuzenji, a small onsen town on the Izu Peninsula.
Visit local shops and restaurants, get to know the people who live here, explore the Izu Peninsula, and discover the little things that make life in this area special.
After work or on your days off, you might soak in a local hot spring, enjoy a seasonal festival or fireworks display, or head out exploring with guests and fellow volunteers.
For volunteers coming from overseas, it’s an opportunity to experience everyday life in Japan beyond the usual tourist destinations.
And wherever you’re from, it’s a chance to meet people you might never have crossed paths with otherwise, discover new perspectives, and make memories along the way. At Hostel Knot, there’s no single way to experience your time here. Take things at your own pace, connect with people in your own way, and discover what makes life in Shuzenji special.
Work at a Hostel. Live in Shuzenji.
Volunteering at Hostel Knot is just one part of your day.
When the work is done, life in Shuzenji begins.
Discover your favorite local spots, get to know the people in town, or head out to explore places around the Izu Peninsula you’ve never been to before.
Rather than simply visiting Japan as a tourist, you’ll have the chance to become part of everyday life in a small Japanese town, even if just for a little while.
Along the way, whether you’re from Japan or coming from overseas, you might find yourself discovering a new kind of everyday life — one shaped by new places, new connections, and experiences you wouldn’t have found on an ordinary trip.
