Shuzenji Bon Odori 2025 (August 1st) – Traditional Summer Festival at Historic Shuzenji Temple

The circle of dance returns to this historic temple.

Shuzenji Bon Odori 2025 | August 1st (Fri), 4:00 PM – 8:30 PM @ Shuzenji Temple

Every year on August 1st, a traditional Bon Odori festival is held in the grounds of Shuzenji Temple, located in the heart of Izu's Shuzenji Onsen.
As the soft glow of lanterns and the rhythmic beat of taiko drums fill the air, both locals and travelers join the circle of dance, creating a warm and lively summer evening.

No experience or traditional outfit required—just join in and enjoy!
There’s a welcoming atmosphere here that makes you want to join the circle—just by watching and following along.
As a casual summer festival you can stumble upon during your journey, it has long been loved by locals and travelers alike.

This small festival isn’t just for tourists.
It’s a cherished summer tradition of Shuzenji, lovingly preserved by local residents who don’t want to let this beautiful scene fade away.

Shuzenji Temple and Tokko-no-Yu – A Moment in a Historic Temple Town

The venue, Shuzenji Temple, is the oldest Zen temple in the Izu region, founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), one of Japan’s most revered monks.
Right next to the temple grounds, you’ll find Tokko-no-Yu, the historic hot spring that marks the origin of Shuzenji Onsen.
Surrounded by both nature and centuries of history, it’s the perfect setting to experience the charm of a truly Japanese summer evening.
