A Summer Tradition in Shuzenji Onsen|Kobo Daishi Festival & Fireworks (August 20–21)

The Kobo Daishi Festival is held annually on August 20 and 21 in Shuzenji Onsen, Izu, to honor Kobo Daishi (Kukai)—the monk who founded Shuzenji Temple and is said to have discovered the famous Tokko-no-Yu, the original hot spring of the area.

August 20|A Magical Night of Lanterns – Mantokukai

On the first evening, a solemn lantern procession called “Mantokukai” takes place, starting from Shuzenji Temple and making its way to Tokko Park.
Hundreds of glowing lanterns held by participants, along with rows of candles lining the streets, gently illuminate the hot spring town in a dreamlike, serene atmosphere. A Buddhist memorial ceremony is also held, offering light and flowers in honor of Kobo Daishi's spirit.

August 21|Spectacular Fireworks and a Classic Summer Festival

The second night features a grand fireworks display, launched from the hillside behind Shuzenji Temple.
Spectators can enjoy dazzling starmines, a "Niagara" cascade of light, and other dramatic fireworks lighting up the summer sky.
The streets of Shuzenji Onsen come alive with festival stalls, traditional food stands, and a lively festival atmosphere, creating a fun and nostalgic experience for couples, families, and solo travelers alike. Don’t miss this two-day celebration that captures the essence of summer in Shuzenji!
