Hostel Knot’s official goods now on sale!! The first goods that we had been waiting for is a Japanese traditional towel, tenugui. A tenugui have been used with Jananese mind. Let me introduce our original tenugui, Musubi-tenugui.
Hostel Knotがあるのは伊豆最古の温泉街・修善寺。街には温泉だけでなく足湯もあり、修禅寺の手水舎では温泉で手を清めます。そんな街を訪れて使いたくなるグッズといえば “手ぬぐい” 。
Hostel Knot is located at Shuzenji where is known as the oldest Onsen(Hot Spring) town in Izu peninsula. You can enjoy a foot bath at a riverside. In Shuzenji temple, visitors cleanse themselves with hot spring at temizuya. And we got a new official goods finally, Tenugui(Japanese traditional hand towel).
先人の知恵の詰まったこの “手ぬぐい” は、遥か昔から日本人の暮らしに寄り添ってきました。Knotを訪れる外国人の方々に、もっと日本の素敵さを知ってもらえるきっかけを作りたい。そうやって、生まれたのがこの「結び手ぬぐい」です。
People have used a tenugui in various scene of the life. Musubi-tenugui, Hostel Knot’s original tenugui, will make a chance to know Japanese culture for foreign visitors.
それでは、気になる “結び手ぬぐい” のデザインをご紹介。第1弾はHostel Knotロゴである結び目マークの総柄です。ワンポイント入っている「結」の文字が個人的にお気に入りです。
Let me introduce the design. The first edition is white with the logo of Hostel Knot. In the center of bottom, I put hand written「結」that means “a knot”.
生地に散りばめられた結び目マークは、デザイン制作する時点で僕(きむ)が１つ１つ手描きさせてもらいました。なので、１枚の手ぬぐいの中には同じ結び目マークは１つもありません。
All of Knot’s logo is hand written one by one, so they are different completely.
これって人と人の出逢いも同じだと思うんですね。一生のうちでたくさんの出逢いを訪れるけど、１つとして同じものはありません。「出逢いの結び目」であるHostel Knotの想いを、そのままデザインにしました。
We think it is like the life. We have countless encounter through the life and all of them is different.
結び手ぬぐいは伝統的な “手捺染” で制作してもらいました。布地に模様を印刷（プリント）することを「捺染」と言います。それを職人さんが「手」で行います。ただ普通のプリントでは、裏までインクが通らず柄が白っぽくなってしまうんです。ここの工房さんは手間暇かけて丁寧な仕事をしてくださるので、Knotのロゴが表裏にくっきりと出るんです。僕 (きむ) がどうしてもこだわりたかったところ。いろんな業者さんに「デザインが細かすぎて無理だ」と断られて絶望していたので、ここの工房さんには感謝しかありません。
Musubi-tenugui is made by “tenassen”, Japanese traditional hand printing. A common printing can’t dye a back side. But the factory we ordered does a good job, so a back side got dyed. I wanted to be particular about it. Thank you for your great work.
コンセプトはそんなところで、お次は機能面。
実は “手ぬぐい” 、旅人にぴったりなアイテムなんです。同じ綿で出来ているタオルほどの「吸水性」と「柔らかさ」はありませんが、逆に「速乾性」と「かさばらない」というメリットを持っています。
Secondly, about functions. Tenugui is fit with travelers. Conpared to a cotton towel, It doesn’t have an absorbability and a tenderness. But it is easy to dry and you can meke it compact.
この２つの特性は、 “旅する日常の中で時間” や”持ち運べる荷物” が限られている旅人にとっては大事なポイントです。
These points are useful for a backpacker who need to save a time and luggage’s amount.

手ぬぐいの用途は様々で、たたみ方と結び方によっていろいろなものを包むことができます。結び目の総柄が包んだもの全体に広がってなんともいい感じ。プレゼントやお土産をちょいと包んで渡したりしたら粋ですよね。
A tenugui has been used as a wrapping clothes. You can see Knot’s logo everywhere. It makes your present more luxury and beautiful.
昔の人は、使い古した手ぬぐいはふきんに使いまわしたそうです。”物を末長く大事に使う” 日本人の本来の心意気を感じます。
People reused a tenugui as a dust cloth. We can learn the intrinsically minds of the Japanese people, “using an item for a long time by valuable ways “.
