We have been operating this hostel in Shuzenji Onsen, located on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, since 2018.
Hostel Knot's concept is"The Knot Between People" "The Knot Between Places".
We hope that from this knot, even just one lasting memory, value, or new perspective will be born.
To create a knot,
・Providing affordable accommodation so that guests have the flexibility to invest in other experiences, creating opportunities for new encounters
・Gathering information about Shuzenji Onsen and the Izu Peninsula to provide guests with more options for their travel itinerary
These are the key initiatives we have been actively implementing.
Our staff are deeply rooted in Shuzenji Onsen, constantly collaborating and engaging with various local businesses, including restaurants, experiences, and hot spring facilities. We also take part in community clean-up activities
We would like everyone to participate in this, either directly or indirectly, creating"A new form of travel".
The serious current situation of Shuzenji Onsen town
"A region that fascinates people" is one of the key services for us at Hostel Knot
On the contrary, if the tourism resources and attractions of Shuzenji Onsen were to be lost, it would be equivalent to the loss of the services offered by Hostel Knot.
There are various issues with the events and activities that are at risk of being lost right now. (Based on hearings from relevant parties.)
・Shuzenji Plum Grove - many old trees, and although there were tree planting activities and large-scale events in the past, managing them has become difficult
・Yukumi-shiki (湯汲み式) - due to a shortage of manpower, it's become difficult to gather the 'Yukumi musume' (hot spring water girls), and the operation is becoming challenging. Additionally, it has been difficult to effectively spread the news about this event.
・Fireflies - staff were assigned during the period when fireflies are visible, but due to a shortage of manpower and financial difficulties, a review of the operation is necessary
・Kobo Daishi FestivalAutumn Lantern Festival・Fireworks Festival - funding for the fireworks display has been decreasing year by year, making it difficult to continue
・Shuzenji Onsen Kiku Kazari (菊飾り) - Items that were placed around various parts of the hot spring town have been scaled back, and there is a tightening of the budget
In addition to this, traditional crafts such as 'Shuzenji carving' and local 'outside baths' (including 'Shin-yu,' which guests can also use at our facility), along with other events, have significantly shrunk in scale or been discontinued in recent years due to the shortage of manpower and financial difficulties
【What we can do】
By addressing each of these challenges, we aim to make Shuzenji Onsen a place where guests feel 'positive changes' and 'freshness every time they visit,' encouraging them to return again
A portion of the support received from our supporters will be donated to the above-mentioned operations, with the names of the donors clearly indicated
Purpose of funds and why Hostel Knot?
Normally, this might be seen as the role of public institutions such as the government or tourism associations.
Of course, we also thought so and have frequently consulted and made proposals to the relevant authorities.
However, local organizations, including public institutions, neighborhood associations, and private unions, are facing an aging population and are also affected by the decline in population.
Due to not knowing how to effectively address the situation, the current reality is that 'scale reduction' and 'abolition or discontinuation' have taken precedence.
Hostel Knot has been involved with many local businesses and community members, not just in the tourism sector. Our business is directly linked to the revitalization and improvement of the town. Therefore, from the very beginning, we have prioritized paying close attention to the 'shape of the town' of Shuzenji Onsen.
With that perspective in mind, we have also conducted thorough hearings with our guests. We understand that what may be considered ordinary for the locals can be seen as very valuable and precious by tourists.
'If you can't do it, just quit' may seem like an easy solution, but breaking down what once existed and rebuilding it is a very difficult task.
Therefore, we are thinking of taking on the challenge of 'maintaining' before things deteriorate, and at the same time, 'revitalizing and rebuilding'.
In the future, once we have solid results as a precedent, we would like to propose suitable initiatives not only for ourselves but also for other businesses.
